A Walk in The Back Garden
When you travel on our trains and look at the countryside
through the carriage window you will see the River Dart,
fields, cattle, trees and nature in the 'wider view'.
But what is going on immediately on either side of the track?
On the embankments, in the gullies and cuttings - the detail
you may not always notice.
For example in our 7 mile long garden, unaffected by modern
farming methods, there's a host of plants brought to Devon
from all over the U.K. by the railways over many years.
As they weren't planted by railway staff how did they get there?
In a major new and ongoing series Maureen Douglas-Green
will be taking walks in our 'Back Garden' throughout the year.
She'll photograph the plant species, the animals and birds that
inhabit our rather precious nature reserve and bring back reports
on just what can be found in the closer view.
Maureen is an experienced botanical photographer, often using
a macro lens to create extreme close ups of the secret lives
of plants and the creatures that inhabit them. This promises to be
one of the most exciting series of feature articles we are undertaking.
We regret that this project is delayed
