DURING THE HALF PRICE WEEKEND

You Could Travel Free - on both days
Now here's an offer you can't ignore!

At Buckfastleigh and Totnes stations South Devon Railway Association members will be manning stands to promote recruitment to the Association.  Recruitment Day is always held on the first day of the railway's running season - and there's some very special offers to tempt you into becoming a Member.

Here's what the Membership Secretary Allan Lovegrove told me: "We offer normal membership rates covering the rest of 2010, but as an additional benefit, travel free, as many times as you like on both Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st.  We give a commemorative special card for travel, + a free copy of the current Bulliver Magazine, as well as offering for sale old copies and SDRA metal badges."

But what does the South Devon Railway Association do?  Well the principle aim of the Association is:  To provide assistance - financial or otherwise - to the South Devon Railway Trust for the operation, promotion and restoration of the Railway between Buckfastleigh and Totnes in the County of Devon.  The Association will endeavour at all times to create standards that - where possible - reflect the best traditions of the Great Western Railway or British Rail (Western Division).

And then you might like to take a look at
the Worcester Locomotive Society Stand
Sunday only
(Owners of pannier tank 5786 running during the weekend)

The Worcester Locomotive Society will hopefully be setting up its new sales stall on the platform next to the museum. The main objective of the event will be promoting the society through the sale of 'branded ' goods and small toys to generate funds for the restoration of its rolling stock. There are interesting items from Mugs to magazines and notelets to  lucky dips and goody bags for children.

Funding  is currently directed towards the overhaul of 0-6-0 Kitson Saddle tank 'CARNARVON'. So if your attending the Half Price weekend pop in and say hello.

You're bound to be a bit peckish by now
so check out all of the Home Made Cakes and Goodies
on sale and raising funds for the
Buckfastleigh Station Group.

The boys and girls who are members of this group look after the station - the bricks and mortar, the signs, station furniture, those lovely gas lamps and they look after that warming log fire in the Booking Hall.  Also under their care is the Museum - currently being refurbished and it's all funded by the likes of cake sales, sponsored walks down the line, fish and chip trains and that wonderfully stocked bookshop round by the Museum.  So go on, spoil yourself with a delicious home made cake and then pop round to the bookshop have a look at their vast stocks of second hand railway books.

First Aid Volunteers Urgently Required

As part of an ongoing project to further upgrade first aid provision on the South Devon Railway, and at Buckfastleigh in particular, there is now a need to recruit more First Aid volunteers for the forthcoming season.

A total of twenty one event days on the railway have been identified when additional First Aid provision will be required. This is in addition to other days, particularly during school holiday periods, when extra First Aid support would be a great advantage to supplement the railway’s regular First Aid trained staff, thus allowing them to concentrate more on their primary role.

Whilst holding a current First Aid certificate and having previous experience would be ideal, it is not essential as full training and on-going support will be provided by Devon EMS, a South Devon based voluntary first aid group.

The amount of time you give to this role is flexible: whilst there is a minimum requirement for two First Aiders on special event days, our aim is to recruit sufficient volunteers in order that the workload may be evenly distributed.

For further information or to express an interest in this interesting and rewarding role, please contact Jim Clarke on 01803 315251 or e-mail sdr@devonems.org.

First Aid volunteers will be on duty on Sat/Sun 20th/21st March at the Half-Price Weekend and during the Easter period. So, if you are at the railway why not take the advantage of having an informal chat.
