BEYOND THE CAMERA
IMPROVING YOUR STEAM RAILWAY PHOTOGRAPHY
A one day course for all those who love photographing
the steam scene - whether beginners or experienced photographers,
led by
Sarah Anne Harvey
the South Devon Railway's Photographer in Residence
with contributions from
Maureen Douglas-Green
The South Devon Railway's Assistant Photographer in Residence
This 'teach in' is just as valid for photographers using simple 'point and press cameras'
as it is for those with DSLR equipment.
"Photography is not an intellectual pursuit, but an emotional one. Your equipment, whatever it is,
is only an extension of your eyes and your emotions. It is simply a box which enables you
to record those emotions." - Sarah Anne Harvey.
The Teach In will take place at the South Devon Railway's Buckfastleigh Station
in the Victorian Picnic Coach and is limited to 10 delegates.
Date - Saturday 26th February 2011 10.00am - 5.00pm
(Registration and early morning coffee from 9.30)
Mid morning tea/coffee, lunch, afternoon tea/coffee is also provided.
The morning session will be a 'classroom' situation, whilst after lunch there
will be time alloted to a practical shooting session at Buckfastleigh when one
locomotive (expected to be 5526 with autotrain) will be in steam and running on the line.
The final session will talk about the use of Photoshop, Lightroom and similar programs
for improving your images, although a further, more detailed, seminar is planned on this subject.
Subjects covered in our morning session include
The Golden Age of Photography.
Using 'Your Mind's Eye'.
Controlled v Reactive Photography.
Researching locations and planning your shoot.
Economy of Movement.
Observation and Opportunism.
The 'technical bits' of shooting.
and commences with a slide show of Sarah's 100 best images from 2010
Sarah points out that she only has a lineside photographic pass for the South Devon Railway
and that all of her other work, including main line, is created from publicly accessible places.
The all inclusive cost, including refreshments and lunch is £60.00.
in the first instance. Places will be allocated on a strictly 'first come first served' basis because
of the limited number of delegates.
Each delegate will be given a copy of the "Beyond The Camera" hand printed
2011 calendar. This calendar is not on sale anywhere and is a gift exclusive
to this seminar.
Can't decide what to give that special person in your life for Christmas?
This seminar would be a great gift! Details from
Sarah Anne Harvey served her 'photographic apprenticeship' in Birmingham and later moved to Surrey, working in London, Surrey and Sussex. Her roots lay in photojournalism but she spent most of her career, spanning some 35 years, as a wedding and portrait photographer. In the 1980's she and her then partner broke new ground by being the first ever High Street studio to have a national exhibition of their work - first in London's South Bank Royal Festival Hall and then in the Barbican. Whilst reluctant to name drop Sarah has photographed members of our own Royal Family, the King and Queen of Romania, politicians and stars of screen and stage.
An experienced photographic seminar lecturer across the UK she also visited Washington in the U.S.A to design a daylight studio for America's highest earning portrait photographer of the time. Currently her steam railway photography can be seen in various railway magazines, gaining a front cover on Heritage Railway's July issue. As Sarah admits "a not uneventful career which I got into purely accidentally. But now it's just a hobby and British steam has always been a passion!" |
