A RECORD BREAKING SEASON
THE FULL REPORT

After the last Mince Pie special train ran on New Year’s Eve, the SDR had clocked up its best ever operating results, beating the two previous best season’s figures in 2007 and 2009.  For many UK businesses 2010 was a grim year, but the South Devon Railway carried nearly 112,000 passengers for the first time in its 19-year history.  In December alone, some 10,000 passengers rode on the line’s Santa, Carols and Mince Pie trains setting a new record for Winter traffic.

When the year’s final passenger figures were totalled, they showed that 101,168 adults and children, plus another 10,821 children aged under five, rode the line in 2010 bringing the total carried to a whopping 111,989.  This represents a 3.7% increase on the previous record of 107,895 set last year.

Achieving over 100,000 passengers for the third time in four years is a major milestone for the largely volunteer run line, which was sold off by the Dart Valley Railway company in 1991 as being ‘uneconomic’.  With increasing numbers every year the South Devon has now chalked up a grand total of 1,655,943 passengers since it took over the line 19 years ago. These impressive figures show that the former Great Western Railway branch line is going from strength to strength as one of Britain’s oldest heritage steam railways, having first opened over 40 years ago in 1969.

South Devon Railway Trust General Manager Dick Wood said: “Naturally, we’re all very proud of achieving our best ever results with a record number of passengers carried in 2010 and some major milestones passed in the last 12 months.

“We finally secured the freehold of the railway in February and significantly expanded our impressive range of engineering services to the heritage railway sector in August with the acquisition of Roger Pridham’s boiler repair business from Tavistock, including building a new boiler shop here at Buckfastleigh.

"We have achieved success by broadening the SDR’s nostalgic appeal to visitors of all ages and providing better visitor facilities. We will have also promoted the railway as a great ‘three-in-one’ great value-for-money day out along with our linked attractions at the award winning Totnes Rare Breeds Farm and Buckfast Butterfly & Otter Sanctuary.

“We know that our visitors come back again and again to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of steam in the Devon countryside and to soak up this nostalgic and most relaxing form of transport.

“The SDR operates nearly all year round and we have a number of great special events to look forward to. In 2011, we will mark the 20th anniversary of the SDR trust taking over the line from the Dart Valley Railway with a special Cambrian themed event at Easter.”

SOUTH HAMS DISTRICT COUNCIL
CHAIRMAN VISITS THE SDR

On Wednesday 29th December Cllr John  Baverstock, Chairman of South Hams District Council, together with Mrs Baverstock and their grandaughter visited Buckfastleigh Station where they were met by General Manager Dick Wood and Chief Operating Superintendent John Haslam.  As a guest of the Railway they then travelled down the line to Totnes on the 10.45 Mince Pie Special.

A LINE FOR ALL SEASONS

On the last day of the Santa by Steam specials I was once again priveledged to travel down the line on the footplate - this time on the railway's newly restored Collett mixed traffic loco no.3205.  In our brochures and PR material we claim that we have a seven mile line running through beautiful countryside and, unlike many statements in the political world, this is not a statement dreamt up by a 'spin doctor'.  It doesn't matter which season you choose to travel in the beauty is always there, changing views - certainly, never quite the same two weeks running - definitely, and as stunning in the winter as in summer - without doubt.

Bulkamore lies between Caddaford and Riverford (Hood) Bridge.
On this section of the line John Harris and the cutting back gang have done much during the past twelve
months to open up the views, seen here in our photograph, and restore the scene to how it was some
30 to 40 years ago.  From this point the line can be seen curving off to the right and out of the photograph,
a view not available for many years.

Approaching Riverford (Hood) Bridge.
The River Dart runs very close to the line on the approach to the bridge and today the river was in a tranquil mood.
The early morning light caught the last vestiges of autumn colours with glorious reflections of trees in the
calm waters.  It's not too late to see such sights, our Mince Pie Specials run for six days from
Tuesday 28th December until Sunday 2nd January inclusive.

The 'Plymouth Partnership' were the crew tolerating my presence on the footplate; Mike on the left firing
and Howard driving.  You would be forgiven for thinking that the cab of a locomotive is the warmest
place to be in this weather, but running tender first into the face of a bitterly cold wind as we ran
down the line to Totnes I can assure you it is not.

Later in the day and safely back on terra firma I caught the second locomotive being used on the
Santa specials - 3803 - rounding the curve at Caddaford on its way back to Buckfastleigh,
with crew Ben Greening driving and Colin Harmes firing.  At this point I must record a comment
made to me by General Manager Dick Wood -
"To paraphrase Brian Hanrahan, who sadly died this week aged 61 of cancer, and using his world famous
BBC broadcast comment in 1982 during the Falklands War: "I counted all of the Santa trains out and
I counted them all back in."
"No train casualties and a great team effort by everyone in some pretty awful circumstances weather wise."

and here's an email received at the White House from some happy passengers
"To All the Staff,
Thank you for a wonderful trip on Monday afternoon we all had a brilliant time and appreciated the superb effort
made by all the staff; the choice of presents was spot on and we were very impressed with how you
organised the snowy scenery - just perfect!
We will be back.  Happy Christmas and a Steamy New Year!
The Perry Family"

We'll leave the last words to Father Christmas who, in an exclusive interview, told us just how much
he had enjoyed meeting all the boys and girls, their parents, grandparents and friends,
and assured us that he would be back next year when Santa by Steam trains
will run again in December 2011.

SANTA BY SNOW

For those volunteers and staff who have been unable to get to Buckfastleigh because of the driving conditions, as well as those who have been working so hard on the railway and therefore unable to enjoy the wintery scenes, we thought we'd publish this pair of images.  The location is between Bishops Bridge on the gradient up to Hood Bridge on Tuesday 21st December.  Driver Mike Webb opens the regulator on 3803 as he tackles the short climb with a full compliment of passengers and seven on.  This was the 1.00pm departure from Buckfastleigh returning from Totnes and somewhere on the train Santa will be singing carols with all of his helpers and no doubt some excited children.

Déjà vu at The South Devon Railway

There must have been a feeling of déjà vu for staff and volunteers who woke up on Monday 20th December  to chaos on the road transport network in Devon, caused by overnight snow up to eight inches deep in parts of the county.  For the second year running it was touch and go whether our volunteers and staff would be able to physically travel to the railway and get things up and running for the Santa by Steam services.

It seemed like a repeat of Wednesday 23rd December 2009 when a similar situation occurred but then,  as happened this year, a superb effort was made by all not to let children lose the chance of seeing Santa in his Grotto on the trains.  The driveway into the railway from Dart Bridge Road was cleared and gritted by the Bobcat whilst volunteers shovelled snow and ice off the platform.  A fire was lit and stoked up in the Booking Office hallway and Christmas lights turned on to give a warm welcome to all of those passengers who made the journey in through appalling road conditions.

All three of the day's services ran, albeit departing later than scheduled to wait for passengers who had rung in to say they were being held up in the chaotic traffic. Passengers who were booked on but missed the 10.15 departure were offered seats on the 1.00pm or 3.30pm departures wherever possible.

This website set up a special 'Santa Trains and Road Reports' page to bring news that the trains were running and to continually update the local traffic conditions around Buckfastleigh throughout the day.  A similar service will be in operation on Tuesday 21st if the forecast overnight freezing temperatures bring more chaotic road conditions this morning.

To end on a lighter note the second train of the day, hauled by heavy freight loco no 3803, was crewed by Driver Dick Wood (the SDR's General Manager) and Fireman Colin Harmes, both of whom served the railway in its very early days of preservation.  Colin has returned to the railway in great style and it was great to see these two characters back together on the footplate.  Being senior in age I'm sure Colin had a few pearls of wisdom for Dick; and if it wasn't putting my own position on the line I'd be tempted to caption the following image "The Sorcerer and his Apprentice".  But of course I wouldn't dream of doing that.

A WINTER WONDERLAND
FOR SANTA BY STEAM

As the final six days of Santa by Steam commenced on Saturday 18th December Buckfastleigh became a winter wonderland.  A little more than 'a dusting of snow' and a clear blue sky provided the perfect scene for Santa to greet the children and then meet them in his Grotto as the train progressed down the line to Totnes.  With the River Dart and its landscape looking stunningly beautiful it really was a magical trip for children and adults alike.

The Santa trains completely sold out this week and according to the railway's managers the SDR has bucked the economic trend in 2010 and by the close of this weekend will have carried over 109.000 passengers; giving confidence that the year end figures will break through the 110.000 mark.

THE CHRISTMAS DINNER
- AND THE 'F' WORDS

Last night, Tuesday 14th, saw the South Devon Railway lay on a Christmas dinner for its volunteers in the Buckfastleigh Refreshment Rooms.  It was indeed a triumph of organisation as Louise and her team not only prepared a Christmas dinner for 80, the maximum seating capacity, during the day but also provided the Refreshment Room's normal daytime catering services for the public.  The arriving volunteers were met by Expressway Models' Managers Terry and Brenda who guided them to their seats at the beautifully laid out tables; the whole evening event being masterminded by Graham our Refreshment Rooms Manager.

Graham adds the finishing touches to the tables - all set out after the
Refreshment Rooms closed to the public.

The Christmas Dinner was sponsored by the South Devon Railway Trust as a thank you for all the hard work put in during the running season and of course the continuing 'behind the scenes' work that is put in during the closed season.  One thing we know for certain, from the comments received from passengers and visitors, 2010 has been yet another successful year in the annals of the South Devon Railway and that's down to the efforts of scores of volunteers, some of whom were present last night.

Oh and those 'F' words..........well they didn't come from the kitchen but from the diners who all agreed FANTASTIC, FABULOUS FOOD.  Eat your heart out Mr Ramsey!

ALL SANTA TRAINS ON
SECOND WEEKEND FULLY BOOKED

All six trains across the weekend of 11th and 12th December were amongst some of the earliest trains to be sold out.  Despite adding extra trains to this year's Santa by Steam, taking the total number of available services to thirty, twenty six are now fully booked.  It's a very busy time for the railway with everyone from the General Manager down working hard to make sure the Santa experience is both pleasurable and exciting for children and adults alike.

service on Saturday 11th.  Santa's Grotto is in the coach directly behind the locomotive.

BISHOPS BRIDGE PW WORK
PROGRESSES WELL

Whilst many parts of the country grind to a halt under several centimeters of snow, Devon escapes the worst of it - much to the relief of the Permanent Way department.  On a gloriously sunny day at Bishops Bridge work progresses smoothly on relaying the loop at the Totnes end, unimpeded by the problems that northern and eastern counties are suffering with the weather.  There's no doubt too that the road railer is such a valuable asset when it comes to relaying several panels of track, not only in terms of the physical effort saved but in the shortening of the turn round time for such a job.

Our first photograph shows the farm crossing in the centre of the loop, which was dug out
and relaid a couple of weeks ago.  I'm hoping that the car in the background will one day
be as sort after as Ivo Peter's Bentley!

Seen on the right is the relaying work at the Totnes end of
the loop, photograph taken from the farm crossing.
With only one train in service on the Santa By Steam specials,
work can continue unhindered since the main running line
is still in use.

PW Department have a heavy schedule of work to complete
in the 'close' season.  In the New Year, when the Mince Pie
Specials are over, they will be moving to Buckfastleigh
where extensive trackwork will be undertaken.

PW Manager Andy Matthews always appreciates any extra
volunteer help he can get on weekdays and if you would
like to get some fresh air and gentle exercise he can be
contacted direct during working hours on 07979 852823 or
via The White House.

CLASS 25 ON PERMANENT WAY DUTIES AT THE
GLOUCESTERSHIRE WARWICKSHIRE RAILWAY

D7612, the South Devon Diesel Traction Ltd's Class 25, has been away at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway for the past few months; remaining there after taking part in the July 9th, 10th and 11th Diesel Gala. It would seem that whilst the SDR has not yet seen too much of the early round of white stuff the folks up in Gloucestershire have and Pete Burrows of the SDDT has supplied me with a photograph of D7612 hard at work on a PW train.

Earlier in the year the GWS suffered a devasting landslip just south of Gotherington station which affected more than 820 feet of track and severed its services to Cheltenham Race Course station.  The cost of repairing the embankment and track is one million pounds, for which Pete Waterman launched an appeal.

CAR PARK REFRESHMENT KIOSK
GETS A REFURBISHMENT

The small 'refreshment kiosk' at the entrance to Buckfastleigh Station's carpark is undergoing a major refurbishment.  The kiosk, serving hot and cold drinks, ice cream and snacks has served the railway and its passengers for several years now but it was felt that with an internal redesign and refurbishment a more advantageous use of the space could be gained.  One of the problems was a central pillar, which not only created a visual distraction but also prevented an efficient movement of visitors in and out of the kiosk.

This of course was BR & T (Before Rich and Tony) started work just a few weeks ago, aided and abetted by the 'Sunday crew' of Gordon, Allen and Chris.  As our photograph shows tremendous advances have been made with the removal of the pillar and construction of a new central beam.  Additionally the old wooden floor was taken up and relaid with the first covering of concrete.  The roof will receive proper insulation and although there is still an enormous amount of work to be done the refurbished kiosk will be back in service for the 2011 Spring Half Price Weekend.

ROTARY CLUB GETS THE
SANTA SEASON OFF TO A GOOD START

Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th November saw the Dartmoor Vale Rotary Club's annual Santa Specials running over the South Devon Railway.  With two trains running each day this weekend traditionally sees the start of Christmas festivities at Buckfastleigh and although a bitterly cold wind prevailed the first trains of the day ran under bright sun and clear blue skies.

Guests of the Rotary Club were greeted in front of the Booking Office by brightly dressed clowns and various animal characters.  The Buckfastleigh Station Group had done a splendid job again of decorating the platform with Christmas lights and tree; and the Pied Piper Organ was playing to entertain the crowds.  All in all a great weekend but let's not forget the brilliant and hard work the Rotary Club perform, not just in Devon but throughout the country, for the benefit of others.

DRIVER FOR A TENNER
Report and photographs by Maureen Douglas-Green

No price could really be put on a day that brings about the fulfilment of a boyhood dream: no price can be put on a day where we are actively encouraged to remember the sacrifices made by others so that our dreams could come true. For David Worsnop, his 60th birthday treat not only gave him memories that he would always treasure, but benefited the Royal British Legion.  David was able to exchange his occupation as a stocktaker to take stock of the simply wonderful experience of being able to drive a steam train. As very keen steam train enthusiasts, it was the first time that David and his wife Carrie had ever been on the footplate: previously, they had ‘always done’ the trains as passengers, but today gave them a new perspective on things.

Under the careful, patient, expert teaching of Driver Bob Vaughton, and his equally capable Fireman, Chris Bowden, both David and Carrie shared the excitement and thrill of driving 3205 out of Buckfastleigh station to Caddaford and back. After David’s turn, his grin was simply enormous. ‘Tremendous!’ was his comment on the experience. Carrie took to the controls also as one born to drive; her grin also did not leave her face for an instant.

For Carrie’s 60th, she had been treated to a balloon flight, and David had accompanied her. Carrie felt it only right that she also should accompany David on his 60th treat. A decision was reached though long before they left the footplate, that as soon as circumstances permitted, they wanted to have a go at the SDR’s Footplate Experience, such was the sheer enjoyment they derived from the day.

The dreams of many came true today; the smiles, laughter, enthusiasm and sheer delight of the participants will be remembered in conjunction with the thoughtfulness, caring and expertise of the South Devon Railway staff who made the day possible, and their encouragement to us, to support such a deserving cause.

THE RECTANK WAGON

On Monday 8th November the rectank was lifted from its bogies and placed on packing ready for media blasting and paint within the next couple of weeks weather permitting. Jon Morton told me that the bogies were rolled into the PLOG shed so that they can be cleaned up and the brakes made workable. This work is now priority due to the limited time that the body will be off and Jon would appreciate getting as much help as possible to complete the work in time.

Looking a little forlorn outside the PLOG shed is the rectank wagon off its bogies.

BOILER SHOP PROGRESS

A mixed bag of weather during the last week does not seem to have impeded progress on the Boiler Shop new build.  The floor has been concreted and the shuttering is in place on all three sides.  The rails leading in from the turntable have been 'dug out' of the concrete as our photograph shows.  Work can now continue installing machinery in the knowledge that at least everything is now weather proof.
